A spending review that starts at the morning market
Ask a household in town what they spend, and the first answer is often the pickup or the card. Ask what left their hands yesterday, and the answer is the market. Those are different kinds of money. A spending review that starts from the bank app and never mentions the market will describe a month nobody recognises.
Write the market as a total, not a confession
For seven mornings, jot the total paid at the market and what the bag was for in three or four words: fish, vegetables, rice, fruit. There is no need to defend the menu. The office is not scoring meals. The total is what the monthly picture needs, because market cash rarely appears as a neat transfer with a merchant name.
If one person shops and another pays the instalments, both need to see the same page. Arguments in the meeting usually come from a transfer one spouse thought was occasional and the other has been sending every month. Once it is written as repeating, the card payment has a number that can sit beside it instead of colliding with it.
Split the month into three piles
- Repeating costs: rent or housing, the market pattern, transport, a family transfer that happens every month, each instalment
- Spikes: a school-term payment, a trip home, a repair, a festival week
- Unclear cash: amounts nobody can place, left visible rather than hidden inside another category
Spikes are not spread into a fake daily average unless you want them to be. A term fee belongs to the month it is paid, with a note that it returns next term. Treating it as a surprise every time is how the card gets used for it. Seeing it on the picture lets the household hold a little back in the months before.
Stop at the picture if that was the task
A spending review ends when the month is readable. It does not automatically become a repayment order. Some households book the debt-repayment engagement next. Others only needed the page so two adults would stop guessing. Both are finished pieces of work. The fee for the review covers the picture, and the longer plan is quoted on its own if you ask for it.
